Hi KIF1A.ORG Family!
This year we are planning our first “Superhero Challenge for a Cure” fundraiser to advance our mission at KIF1A.ORG! We will rock this virtually or socially distanced despite this pandemic! It is a very exciting time for KAND research and therapeutic development! With the growing attention and collaboration with research partners, it is vital we keep funds flowing. This is a great way to set the bar high for global awareness and participation!
The KIF1A community is putting our own “superhero spin” on the traditional virtual fundraiser. We want this to be fun for everyone of all abilities! So, put on your superhero gear because we are taking some action against KAND!!
Who: All of you
What: A Superhero Challenge
When: Now through October 31, 2020
Where: You name it!
Why: Our goal is to fund research to find a cure for THIS generation of KAND superheroes. We challenge you to set a $1,000 USD fundraising goal. If you want to aim higher—go for it! Teams have until October 31 to complete their challenge. You decide what challenge you want to tackle and whether you want to complete it in one day or across several days.
How: KIF1A.ORG is using a trusted crowdfunding platform called GiveGab to make it super easy for you to create an online fundraiser.
The Superhero Challenge for a Cure gives families and fans an opportunity to create awesome challenges in which their family, community and most importantly, their superheroes can participate. Anything goes! We’ve included some fun challenge ideas in the list below, or you can visit KIF1A.ORG’s GiveGab page to see some examples of Challenges that have launched early (click on the “Fundraising Champion” names).
Need some cool challenge ideas to use or get your creative side going? Here you are, and remember, wear your superhero gear, share pictures, and have some much-needed fun!!! 😊
- _______-A-Thon Challenge: Invite supporters (individual donors and companies, too!) to donate based on your success of accomplishing a certain goal. For example: donors give $1 per walk around the track (a Walk-A-Thon). Get creative! How many laps around the school, rolls down a hill or swings on a swing set can you do? Donors get to pick their maximum contribution (for example, they’ll give up to $50 for you to roll down the hill 50 times).
- Distance Challenge: Set a distance walk and/or run (for example: 5K, 1 Mile), or do a “1 Mile a Day for 11 Days” challenge.
- “On Wheels” Challenge: bikes, scooters, hoverboards, wheelchairs, gait trainers, roller blades…anything with wheels!!
- Hiking Challenge: Conquer mountains for our superheroes. Literally.
- Pie in the Face Challenge: Pledge to let your superhero throw a pie in your face on Facebook live if supporters help you reach your fundraising goal!
- Shave Your Head Challenge: How much would people pay to see you shave your head? It’s all for a great cause!
- Virtual Workout Challenge: this works best if you find a certified Zumba or Piyo instructor willing to donate time (host one event, or hold a workout marathon—one a day for 11 days). Find a location where people can socially distance OR host online zoom workouts. Participants donate money to attend the event(s).
- Spirit Challenge: Each day of the event, people do something different—crazy hair day, pajama day, wear red day, etc. Bonus points for incorporating a superhero theme throughout.

Want to reach as many people as you can with your fundraiser? Need a little lift from family and friends to help you organize your fundraiser? Here are a few tips for making your challenge a team effort.
1. Don’t try to do it alone. Think of 10 people (or more) who are your child’s biggest cheerleaders and ask them to be your main fundraisers (think of them as your team leaders).
- Encourage them to register and make a pledge to raise at least $100 each.
- Try to think of individuals who have different networks (work, friend circles, location).
- Get them involved from the start. Create a Zoom meeting to coordinate what the team’s challenge will be.
- Will just the family participate in the challenge?
- Will your team leaders also participate in the challenge?
- Will your team leaders only ask for donations, or ask others to also register and participate in the challenge?
2. Ask for companies (both small and large) to make a match contribution or a donation to the cause. Many companies have gifting as part of their budget. Small businesses are often very willing to support causes within their own community.
3. Ask friends and family on social media to share the link to donate. Best way to share this information? Create a live video to share what is on your heart and how these donations impact lives. Include your story with photos and video on your fundraiser webpage at GiveGab.
- What isn’t more exciting than giving someone a reason to wear superhero gear?!
- Offer something really enticing:
- Largest donor to your team or team leader with largest collection of donations wins X.
- Winner of your team’s chosen challenge wins X.
- The winner doesn’t need to win anything monetary. It could be that the winner gets to do something really awesome (like throw a pie in someone’s face or pour slime over someone’s head 😉).
- Promote your event with a really fun idea: “If we meet our goal, my superhero gets to push me into a pool full of pudding…LIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!! Again, just a suggestion).
- If you are financially able and willing, promote matching up to an X amount of donations raised.
One really important (but really fun) request for participants: wear your superhero gear as you tackle your challenge! Make your own mask, or go all out with a full costume! Take pictures in your gear and share the fun on social media with #WeCanCureKAND.

Send an email to impact@kif1a.org and a KIF1A.ORG staff member or volunteer will get back to you!
A big superhero thanks to Teams Abby, Andy, Gino, Gia and Harlin for collaborating on the Superhero Challenge for a Cure project!
